Tooth Extraction Healing Stages

Tooth Extraction Healing Stages

September 16, 2024

Understanding the process of healing after a tooth extraction can help you better manage your recovery and ensure optimal oral health. At Riverglen Dental, we believe in providing our patients with comprehensive information about dental procedures, including what to expect during the healing stages post tooth extraction.

The Immediate Aftermath of Extraction

Immediately after your tooth extraction, your body begins the healing process. A blood clot forms in the socket where your tooth once was, which is crucial for protecting the bones and nerves underneath.

  • It's essential to avoid dislodging this clot in the first 24 hours, as it can lead to a painful condition known as dry socket.
  • You might experience some swelling and discomfort, which can be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers and cold compresses.

First Few Days Post Extraction

In the first few days after the extraction, your body continues to repair the extraction site.

  • New skin and bone tissue begin to grow over the clot.
  • It's still important to be gentle around the extraction site during this time to prevent disrupting the healing process.
  • Rinse your mouth with warm salt water to keep the area clean and avoid hard or crunchy foods that might cause irritation.

One Week Post Extraction

By the end of the first week, you should notice a significant reduction in pain and swelling.

  • The hole where your tooth was is beginning to close up, although it will still be noticeable.
  • Continue to maintain good oral hygiene, but avoid brushing directly on the extraction site.

Two Weeks Post Extraction

Two weeks post extraction, any minor discomfort should have subsided.

  • The gum tissue should be completely healed over the extraction site, although the underlying bone may still be sensitive.
  • Regular dental hygiene can be resumed, but you should still avoid any particularly hard or crunchy foods.

One Month Post Extraction

By this point, the extraction site should be completely healed.

  • The socket should be closed up, and there should be no pain or sensitivity.
  • You can now resume your normal diet and oral hygiene routine.
